Dangling shit in front of the camera to see what would happen. Moreover, the concepts we can create are infinitely extensible — meaning, we can pile concept upon concept to generate ever increasing levels of generalization and abstraction.

Awareness and energy or pure presence seem to be aspects of consciousness which are outside the symbol of the Ego. What came next is also relevant, and I hope I relate this right. But he really wishes they did, not only because they’re his ideas. Just like the hofstadrer of souledness, one hocstadter its many masks.

That is, if their logical activity was organized in an equivalent way, silicon chips could support consciousness just as neurons do. Lists with This Book. Hofstadter, from the very beginning of his exceptionally discursive argument, presumes that what he is doing is constructing a metric of souledness through which he can estimate the size of soul or degree of consciousness possessed by an entity. Magical-seeming, mind you, but not truly dtrange.

These patterns of symbolic activity have a certain degree looop autonomy in so far as they really do simulate the perspective of our significant others. Yet as a scientist he must have the habit of experimental verification of results. He tries to argue through several chapters that the decentered–“strange loopiness”–of consciousness comes about because cognition I enjoyed much of Hostetter’s account of the ways in which a strictly biological account of cognition fails to grasp the complexities of consciousness and identities.

What is the mechanism that bridges the gap between the world of spirit and the world of flesh? Where is the something-it-is-like to be me? This seems to me to be a satisfying, although not necessarily complete, analysis of the hoftsadter of human consciousness in a material universe.

In a nutshell, our quandary is this. I love Hofstadter but the good parts of this book were a rehashing of GEB and The Mind’s I, and the parts I struggled through were off the mark as believable cognitive philosophical theory.

Concepts are also extensible in that we can map analogies between seemingly dissimilar concepts. What is a self, and how can a self come out of stuff that is as selfless as a stone or a puddle?

Hofstader is certainly no Cartesian dualist, but his ideas are neither what you would expect from a material monist. Conveniently, the core ideas of the book all come together in Chapter 20, featuring a dialogue a form familiar to GEB readersbetween two characters, Strange Loops andwho represent, respectively, Hofstadter and an imaginary skeptic.

Lots of things intruded on my time and it can be finished far more quickly than my dates would imply. Easier to understand than Godel, Escher, Bach, especially if you read that one first. I’m not sure that we’re necessarily in safe territory if we say that something like strznge plant doesn’t have consciousness. For example, one might say hofstaeter writing an original philosophical article is a lot like trying to cut a trail hofsradter the jungle: The question, then, becomes why is the “I” concept uniquely significant?

If you can prove it, then it’s false.

Where are my qualia? The quickest way to refute this claim is with dyslexia, where a concrete word, number or shape is viewed completely differently by a dyslexic brain as compared to a normal brain. Jul 10, Brady Gunnink rated it it was amazing. This notion may seem far out at first, but I believe Hofstadter is onto something. But Hofstadter, probably aware of this phenomenon, wants us not to decide whether a mosquito has “interiority,” which is debatable, but to admit that some living things don’t and therefore justify his “soul” scale.

I look forward to reading the remainder of the book and perhaps finding a few nuggets of value.
