But the reason I find the story distasteful in a way that, say, Swift’s ” A Modest Proposal ” or the Onion’s hilarious ” Bush ‘refuses to dignify’ mass murder allegations ” story are not, is that it describes the aftermath of a real event, the Oklahoma bomb in Return to Book Page. Though it is never explicitly mentioned, it is pretty obvious what the story is referring to — and whom is being talked about.

Of course, the story has appeared in other books as well, but the librarian decided for me which book I really meant. It is also mean-spirited and somewhat exploitive. He has written two YA novels for Lucasfilm.


But obviously people disagree, since it has been nominated for various prizes.

Want to Read Currently Reading Read. Obviously this is targetted specifically at the argument that the death penalty is a justifiable form of social retribution, though it also makes one think about general social hysteria and moral panics such as we have seen in the UK over paedophiles this summer.
